About University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky, commonly known as UK, is a public, co-educational university, located in Lexington which is the 2nd largest city in Kentucky, as well as the 65th largest one in USA. During the 2008 census, Lexington’s population was estimated at a number of nearly 300 000 inhabitants, more of whom were living in the metropolitan area - 453,424 people. The city was founded in 1775, 17 years before Kentucky became a state, and by 1820, it became one of the largest and wealthiest towns, west of the Allegheny Mountains.
UK traces its roots back in 1865, when it was founded by John Bowman, under the name of Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, which was changed in 1916, when the school became known under the current name of University of Kentucky. UK became racially integrated, in 1949, when African American Lyman T. Johnson, won a lawsuit against the university, to be admitted in the graduate program.
Since its founding, UK grew, being known today as the highest ranked research university in the state, according to the US News and World Reports, having an enrollment of nearly 28 000 students, consisting of 16 colleges and a graduate school, through which it offers 99 master’s programs, 93 undergraduate programs, 66 doctoral programs, as well as 4 professional programs.
The athletic teams from UK are known as the Kentucky Wildcats, which are best known for their achievements in basketball, program that is considered to be among the most elite NCAA Basketball programs, being recorded as the most winning athletic program in the history of college basketball. UK also experienced victory, in other spots fields, than basketball, such as cross country, winning the women’s championship in ’88, also winning 8 individual championships in gymnastic, as well as 17 national championships in cheerleading.
